Oi oi fellow thelemaphants!
Though I must say that watching 10 minutes of american news telly makes me physically ill I've got a few spasms on this,,, here in Denmark we already have a law against blasphemy,, no judge has had the balls to actually pass any judgments on this since 1945' ,, at the moment there's serious discussions on removing this law as it contradicts a few others,, mainly laws on freedom of speech and then there's the fact that the blasphemy law is superfluous in regards to the fact that we already have the personal libel laws,,,, the problem here in denmark is mainly that though the blasphemy law is nuts, no politrixian would actually go against it as they'd then automatically fall into an "i'm an anti muslim" catagory... so, people just continue to talk....
cheers !

This should certainly be fought but from the angle of freedom of speech and certainly not Anti-Muslim. Are there any current attempts to get this law repealed by certain politicians? Any politicians specifically blocking this? Could letters or something be written to them? -V.

yeah yeah,, things are already bein' done and the blasphemy law'll be abolished soner than later,,, the current political regime in DK are about to be unelected and another regime will take over,,, the primary reason as to why the current regime tiptoes around the subject is one regarding our primeminister who wishes to become the next CO of Nato,, his otherwise good chances of being elected will most likely be hindred by Turkey if he stirs up to much trouble amongst illiterate muslims so his partei makes sure that that doesn't happen'.....
more death to dalai lama!

some add. notes on religon in Denmark.. religion and state isn't seperated in denmark,, meaning, if you are a jew, buddhist, muslim or atheist your taxes pays for the upkeep of churches, burial plots and the education of lutheran priests,, also our Queen or king must be a lutheran christian and is the defacto ruler of the church,,, people are quite annoyed about this, but although 84% of the danes are registered members of the church of denmark most people only visit a church at birth, at marriage and at funerals,, mostly priest hold sermons for empty churches.. danes are to such a great extend "cultural" christian that it is viewed as extremely radical to take religion seriously enough to become an atheist.. the "atheist society" in denmark numbers app. a 1000 individuals,, these people are quite industrious and yesteryear got a law passed that made it possible for atheists and other non-christians to be burried in unconsecrated soil... the point that our church is state sponsored makes being an intellectual dane quite interesting and ofcourse makes conversations with the blackrobes very funny as they all very well know that their mandate is based on obsolete renaisance nation state fascism,, this tends to keep them thight lipped and docile as they'd do everything not to stir attention to the obvious fact that they're only working on borrowed time,, ,, an estimated guess suggests that state and church will be completely seperated in 10-20 years and then christianity will be severly fucked in denmark as only a tiny minority would actually give two cents to a church if it wasn't mandatory,,,,, as a side note, most denmarkians consider the USA an extremly radical christian country on par with Saudi Arabia..
have a nice day!

Regarding Denmark: Honestly, that sounds beautiful to me. Christian churches are run entirely off of congregational support here in the States. I'm sure that Denmark's religions will have to move in the same directions eventually, and I don't see how the effect could be anything but good for the church.. and for those who hate the church. Sounds like a Win-Win kind of culling of the herd. But, I've been known to speak before my insensitivity filter is engaged, so...
Regarding the potential Blasphemy law... I just simply don't see it happening. In my mind, it would cause a revolution here in the States.
Just remind the Christians that Christ was murdered because he stood accused of Blasphemy. He said things like, "I and the father are One," and, "I have no Will but to do the Will of him who sent me."
Now, I think the Christians and the Eastern thinkers can agree that any one religion is going to accuse every religious act that is NOT a part of their religion of "Blaspheming" their "gods" or their "god's land" or their "god's television station" (makes me think of FOX News... lol...). Isn't that the whole reason Israel is hated in the Middle East? - their very presence in the "Muslim World" is a Blasphemy...? Christians won't be for this law. And if they waver, their paranoia about being persecuted themselves could be used to prevent it. We just need the ear of that talk radio show that comes on just about every Christian radio station during the middle of the day. It's the main way they spread their paranoia and political agenda. The worst of the pastors and congregants listen to it so that they'll know what to think and preach about political issues.
uGhh..! The more I think about it, the more I am against this law. Yes, you'd have my sword, ...so to speak... lol...
